What Is Prayer and Why Do We Pray?

March 27, 2022

Even with church membership reaching an all-time low, 87% of people say they believe in God.

Of course, some individuals pursue God by going to church, reading their Bible, and praying, but others don’t. Then you have people who want to believe and know God but aren’t sure where to start.

If you long to know God but aren’t sure how to build a relationship with Him, you might want to learn how to pray. What is prayer, you might wonder?

Prayer is a valuable tool that believers use to build their relationship with God. If you’re ready to start praying, you’ll benefit by reading this guide, as it explains what prayer is and why you should use it.

What Is Prayer?

The simplest way to describe prayer is a conversation between you and God.

When you think of a conversation, you know it requires at least two people. Prayer is the same thing, except it’s a conversation between you and God.

Additionally, praying is something you can do anytime or anywhere. You can pray out loud or silently in your mind. God hears you speaking when you pray, even when you don’t say it aloud.

Finally, you can use prayer to tell God your feelings, thoughts, and struggles. You can ask for forgiveness for your sins and praise Him for the blessings He’s given you.

How to Pray

Many people new to the faith think that they need to learn some special formula to pray. That’s simply not true, though.

Praying is something that only requires saying your thoughts. In other words, it doesn’t have to be formal, and you don’t need any special training to do it.

Many people do use the “ACTS” outline for praying, which stands for:

  • Adoration
  • Confession
  • Thanksgiving
  • Supplication

You can try this model, but you don’t have to use a model or formula. If you want to pray, just start talking to God. You can also learn how to pray by attending church or checking out https://www.soh.church/.

The Benefits of Prayer: Why Pray?

The final thing to consider is why do we pray? What are the advantages of prayer?

First, prayer connects you to God. It’s one of the simplest ways to grow your faith. When you talk to God during prayer, you might feel a stronger connection with Him.

Secondly, people pray to show praise to God and thank Him for the things He’s done. So if you’re grateful for your life and the things you have, let Him know.

Finally, we pray to confess our sins to God. God is the creator of life and the universe, and He controls our eternity. Therefore, if we believe in Him and want to spend eternity with Him, we must confess our sins.

Prayer Connects You to God

So, what is prayer? As you see, prayer is something that believers use to connect to God. If you believe in God or want to believe, you might want to start using this valuable tool to connect with Him.
